7 Mistakes That Ruin Your Motocross Goggles (And How to Make Them Last All Season)
From muddy race weekends to hot summer motos, your goggles take a beating. Here's how to protect your investment and keep your vision crystal clear every time you ride.
Your Goggles Work as Hard as You Do
Motocross goggles are one of the most overlooked pieces of riding gear.
Most riders spend thousands of dollars on their bike but don't think twice about tossing their goggles into the gear bag after a long day at the track. Before long, the foam starts breaking down, the lenses get scratched, and race day visibility suffers.
At FlowVision, we've spent thousands of hours at motocross tracks across the country. As a family-owned company built by racers, we've learned that a few simple maintenance habits can dramatically extend the life of your goggles and keep your vision clear when every lap matters.
Here are the seven biggest mistakes riders make—and how to avoid them.
1. Never Washing Your Goggles
This is probably the biggest mistake we see.
After every ride, your goggles collect:
- Sweat
- Dirt
- Dust
- Face oils
- Sunscreen
- Mud
Most people simply wipe off the lens and throw them back in their gear bag.
Over time, the sweat and oils trapped in the foam begin to break it down, making it stiff, uncomfortable, and less effective at sealing out dust.
Our Favorite Cleaning Method
After removing the lens, we place the goggle frame and strap in the washing machine on the delicate cycle.
If a pair is especially dirty, we'll spray a little stain remover on the foam before washing.
One important tip: Do NOT use the spin cycle or a heated dryer.
After washing, simply hang the goggles to air dry.
They'll come out looking and smelling fresh, and your foam will last much longer.
2. Riding With Scratched Lenses
It's amazing how many riders continue using badly scratched lenses.
Every scratch creates glare that makes it harder to judge:
- Ruts
- Braking bumps
- Jump faces
- Changing track conditions
Scratched lenses also cause eye fatigue because your brain is constantly trying to focus through imperfections.
If you notice scratches beginning to affect your vision, replace the lens before your next race.

3. Throwing Goggles Into Your Gear Bag
This is one of the fastest ways to ruin a lens.
Helmet buckles...
Boots...
Tools...
Even jersey zippers...
All of them scratch lenses surprisingly quickly.
Instead, keep your goggles protected inside a dedicated goggle case whenever you're traveling.
Your lenses—and your wallet—will thank you.

4. Using the Wrong Lens for the Conditions
One lens doesn't work for every ride.
Choosing the correct lens improves visibility and reduces eye fatigue.
Clear Lens
Perfect for:
- Night riding
- Overcast weather
- Indoor Supercross
- Heavy shade
Smoke Lens
Best for:
- Bright sunny days
- Midday practice
Yellow or Amber Lens
Excellent for:
- Cloudy mornings
- Low-light conditions
- Increasing contrast
Changing your lens for the conditions is one of the easiest ways to improve confidence on the track.
5. Waiting Until Race Morning
We've all done it.
You unload the bike Saturday morning only to discover:
- Torn foam
- Scratched lens
- No tear-offs
- Dirty roll-offs
Instead, inspect your goggles the night before every race.
Make sure:
- Lens is clean
- Foam feels soft
- Strap is secure
- Tear-offs are installed
- Roll-off film is fresh
Race mornings are stressful enough.
Don't let your goggles become another problem.
6. Ignoring Your Tear-Offs & Roll-Offs
Tear-offs and roll-offs are designed to give you perfect vision throughout a moto.
But they only work if they're fresh.
Replace:
- Torn tear-offs
- Dirty roll-off film
- Mud-covered canisters
- Worn pull cords
Small maintenance now prevents big problems later.

7. Buying Cheap Goggles Instead of Quality Ones
We've all seen it.
Someone buys the cheapest goggles they can find.
A few rides later...
- Foam is falling apart.
- Lens is scratched.
- Strap stretches out.
- Vision suffers.
Quality goggles aren't just about looking good.
They're about:
- Comfort
- Safety
- Confidence
- Durability
- Performance
When you can clearly see every line on the track, you ride with more confidence—and confidence often leads to better results.
Ride Hard. See Clear. Make Every Lap Count. 🏁
