Late-Summer Motocross Goggle Check: 5 Things We Do Before Fall Racing
By Nick at FlowVision
By the end of summer, our gear has usually been through a lot.
Dusty practice days, muddy motos, long road trips, goggles getting tossed in the gear bag, lenses getting wiped between motos, and about a million tear-offs getting pulled.
That’s just motocross.
But this is also the time of year when I like to go through our goggle bag and make sure everything is ready for the rest of the season. It only takes a few minutes, and it can save you from finding a scratched lens, broken tear-off post, or empty pack of tear-offs five minutes before staging.
Here are five things we check.
1. Take a Good Look at Your Lenses
Motocross lenses take more abuse than we realize.
Hold each lens up to the light and look for deep scratches, cracks, damaged tear-off posts, or anything that could affect your vision.
A few little scratches are normal. But if you're constantly trying to look around a big scratch while riding, replace the lens.
Clear vision is one of those things you don't really think about until you don't have it.
If yours are getting beat up, check out our FlowVision Replacement Motocross Lenses.
2. Clean Your Goggles the Right Way
After riding, we usually rinse the goggles with clean water and let them air dry.
Try not to aggressively wipe dirt or mud off a dry lens. That's an easy way to turn a perfectly good motocross lens into a scratched one.
Take care of your goggles and they'll last a lot longer.
And don't forget the foam. After a summer of riding in the heat, sweat and dirt can build up pretty quickly.
If your current pair has simply reached the end of the road, you can check out all of our FlowVision Motocross Goggles.
For the younger riders, we also have our FlowVision Youth Motocross Goggles.
3. Restock Your Tear-Offs
This is probably the easiest one to forget.
You show up to the track, open the goggle case and realize you've got four tear-offs left. 😂
Whether you're racing or practicing, I like having several packs in the gear bag so we aren't worrying about it at the track.
Late summer can mean some seriously dusty conditions, and fresh tear-offs can make a huge difference when you're following another rider.
Before the next race weekend, stock the gear bag with FlowVision Motocross Tear-Offs.
4. Get Your Roll-Off Setup Ready Before You Need It
Don't wait until the forecast says rain to figure out whether your roll-off system is ready.
If you use a FlowVision Element Film System™, check the film, pull cord, canisters and lens before heading into the wetter part of the season.
I'd rather have a roll-off setup sitting ready in the goggle case and never use it than be trying to put everything together Saturday morning at the track.
You can find the FlowVision Element Film System™ Roll-Offs and get everything ready before the mud shows up.
5. Go Through the Entire Goggle Bag
This is something we do regularly when we're traveling and racing.
Pull everything out.
Check your goggles. Check the lenses. Count your tear-offs. Make sure you've got your roll-offs. Clean out all the random dirt that's somehow made its way into the bottom of the bag.
If you've got multiple riders in the family, keeping everything organized becomes even more important.
A good goggle case with several goggles already prepped can make race mornings a whole lot easier. That's exactly why we use our FlowVision 5-Goggle Case.
Don't Overcomplicate It
You don't need a complicated goggle maintenance routine.
Keep them clean. Don't scratch the lenses. Keep fresh tear-offs around. Replace worn-out parts when needed. And have a backup pair ready.
That's pretty much it.
We've spent enough years at motocross tracks to know that the little things usually become a problem at the worst possible time.
I'd rather spend ten minutes going through the goggle bag at home than be scrambling around the pits before a moto.
Summer may be winding down, but there's still a lot of riding left.
We'll see you guys at the track.
